The Challenge

Client: Stockwell Methodist Church
Location: Stockwell, London

When Stockwell Methodist Church experienced the failure of its existing fire alarm system, an urgent replacement was required to protect the church, nursery and all building occupants. The church needed a solution that could be installed quickly, maintain compliance with current fire safety standards and minimise disruption to its daily activities.

Surrey Fire & Safety was chosen to design and install a new wireless fire alarm system that would provide reliable protection for the building while preserving normal operations.

The Solution: Wireless Church Fire Alarm Installation

The Surrey Fire & Safety engineers carried out a detailed assessment of the building and designed a new L2 wireless addressable fire alarm system in accordance with BS 5839-1.

A wireless fire alarm solution was selected because it offered several advantages:

  • Reduced installation time.
  • Minimal disruption to church activities and nursery operations.

  • No requirement for extensive cable routes.
  • Enhanced flexibility for the building’s layout.
  • Improved fault monitoring and event reporting.

The addressable system enables individual devices to be identified quickly in the event of an activation, helping to improve response times and building management.

The Outcome

The project was completed successfully, delivering a modern, fully compliant fire alarm system that met the church’s operational requirements.

Revd Rita King from Stockwell Methodist Church comments:

“The Surrey Fire & Safety Team responded quickly and designed and installed a new L2 wireless addressable fire alarm system with minimal disruption to the church and nursery. The work was carried out professionally, communication was friendly and the system was completed to a high standard in compliance with BS 5839-1. We are delighted with the result and the renewed peace of mind it provides.”

Church Fire Safety

Fire safety is particularly important in churches and places of worship. Many church buildings combine large congregation spaces, community facilities, offices, kitchens and childcare areas within a single premise. Some also contain historic architecture, valuable artefacts and irreplaceable heritage features.Early fire detection and warning systems play a vital role in protecting occupants, reducing property damage and supporting safe evacuation in the event of an emergency.
